Course Introduction - What to Expect
Being a survival expert and being an effective instructor are two very different things. You can spend all the time in the world perfecting your knife skills, learning all the plants in the jungle, and becoming a master of knots, but without a true understanding of lesson planning, instructing techniques and other important aspects, it is easy to fall into the trap of focussing too much on hard skills and leave your students feeling overwhelmed, unsafe or uninspired.
Get ready to learn the tricks of the trade in this unique course on Survival Instructor Pedagogy!
The purpose of the course is to prepare you to be able to deliver up to 2 full days or 5 half day sessions of Bushcraft and/or Survival activity content, whether as a stand-alone course or as a part of a wider activity program. It equips you with the necessary tools to teach students from age 7 to 18, as well as adults, who have minimal or no prior knowledge or experience in bushcraft or survival before attending your lessons.
The best instructors are those who can truly engage their students and leave them inspired to continue their own learning after the course finishes. Through this approach, students come away with more than just a set of skills and knowledge; they have a new passion and the energy to want to get out there, do more outdoors, and grow as individuals through this new-found interest. Therefore, this course explores many of the topics related to being an effective instructor in general. Safety considerations, group control techniques, methods of deliverance of lesson content, how to handle common scenarios, looking professional on the job, differences between teaching styles for different age groups, and many other topics all have their place in creating a great Bushcraft and Survival instructor. It is certainly not strictly limited to one’s own personal survival skills.
This course prepares the individual to lead a group of modern, urban students, and give them a fantastic introductory experience, scratching the surface of the fascinating world of Bushcraft and Survival, just enough for them to go back to their daily existence feeling thoughtful, curious, and inspired to go back to nature to do and learn more; but, most importantly, to do all this with a smile on their face, knowing that above all, the learning experience delivered by you—their instructor—was an immensely enjoyable experience.
